When most people think about plastering in any way shape or form they think of interior walls of a home or maybe the ceiling. This is quite common as for years the main focus of plastering was always in the interior because plaster is a very durable product that stands up well to the test of time as long as it is not exposed to the elements. The art of plastering is thousands of years old but many people still think of it as being confined within homes. Rendering, or outdoor plastering is something that not a lot of people are all that familiar with but it is rapidly gaining wide spread recognition all over the world. Rendering actually started life in Europe many years ago. It was a popular way for people to have a beautiful looking home without spending a lot of money on costly exterior repairs and remodelling. This expertise rapidly spread to the Americas and beyond over the course of time and it is now common place to see rendering, especially that of coloured rendering, all over the world.

Technical Info
Coloured render is sometimes known in various parts of the world as Monocouche

Monocouche renders are a type of decorative finish applied to the outside of buildings to provide both decoration and weather protection.

The French term monocouche has been adopted by the European render industry, in an attempt to distinguish modern renders and their application methods from those of traditional renders and their application methods. It refers to the development of more advanced render formulations that can be applied in one coat to form and cure as one monolithic layer on the elevation of a building.

There are other terms that can be used to refer to these type of decorative finishes. A through colour render and a scraped finish render are also indications that a monocouche product has been employed. They refer to the manufacturing process and the application process.

The formulation of a monocouche render is distinguished by the use of White Ordinary Portland Cement as a binder which then enables the formulation to be pigmented. The addition of pigments will give a manufacturer the opportunity to produce a colour range and employ the term through colour render as when the product is applied and finished the pigment will bind in place, all the way through the body of the render.

This factor marks the biggest difference between modern renders and traditional renders that utilise grey Ordinary Portland Cement and hence cannot be pigmented successfully. A traditional render would have to receive a coat of paint to achieve a coloured decorative finish.

Our lime products and finishes are specially prepared for each individual property and will offer superior breathing properties, flexibility and long term protection from the elements
Do not confuse Hydraulic lime with Hydrated lime that is available from builders merchants this material will not set on its own and requires the addition of cement apart from plasticizing the mix this material does not have the same benefits as Hydraulic lime
